A young girl's China, 1920s swimming in Paradise Pools, hiking to the Cave of the Immortals, sharing a Sunday sidewalk with Chiang Kai-shek and Madame Chiang. Mary's life seemed charmed. But elements of danger were never far from home, with hazardous travel, deadly bandits, conflicts between armies and rumblings of war. Child of Two Countries My China Legacy is a collection of true-life adventures, thrilling and humorous tales and touching remembrances of Mary Beck Ecker. From her birth in China in 1917 to her ocean voyage on a Norwegian freighter at 19 to attend college in the U.S., Mary's story captures a rare and magical time on two continents between the two world wars. Born of missionary parents Edwin and Irene Beck, Mary’s first home was Lakeside missionary compound in the lush Yangtze River Valley. With her twin brother Bob, her mother and older brothers Jim and John, she spent summers in the enchanting Lushan mountain resort community of Kuling. Furloughs to the U.S. provided contrast to China life, with modern fashions, the introduction of radio and popular entertainment, the freedom of automobiles, passenger train journeys and characters like her 90-year old Colorado cowboy neighbor who shot his pistol off the back steps.

I loved, loved, loved this book. So interesting, authentic and sincere. My mom and dad read it too. Thank you for telling these stories.
My husband and I just finished reading Mary's book. It was fascinating. She had so many interesting tales to tell. The main reason I wanted this book is because I have been helping Mary for quite a few years now at Pinecrest Nursing Home in Mt. Morris, Illinois, so knowing her as well as I do, I had to have it. I would recommend it to everyone. Mary is such an inspiration to me and many others. I am so glad she is in my life.
Prior to reading this book I knew little of American missionary involvement with China in the early 1900s, even though it's part of the cultural legacy which helped to define the complex relationship that exists between these two countries today. Child of Two Countries My China Legacy is a oral history of one family that was involved with this movement. It consists of great storytelling that weaves in humor as well as heart-wrenching vignettes. What is really astonishing is author Mary Beck Ecker's incredible memory. She is nearly 100, and she has retained intricate, rich story details that are there for your enjoyment in this book. I strongly recommend this page-turner of a great, real-life drama.
A charming personal glimpse of life in China and America in the 1920's and 30's. What was it like for a young girl growing up in an exotic land? Mary tells of missionary life, the hardships and humor, danger and enchantment as a she experienced it. I loved the photographs of the time. This book is beautifully designed, an enjoyable, engaging read, filled with interesting and touching tales. This memoir reads much like fiction, with dramatic events like watching the Emperor of Japan review his fleet before WWII, avoiding armies threatening to take over the mission compound or surviving treacherous travel. There are funny parts, too, in childhood escapades and the sometimes daring choices of youth. Mary encounters fascinating characters, both in China and the U.S., famous and unknown. She tells of Chiang Kai-shek and Madame Chiang, filmmaker Burton Holmes and Pearl Buck, and also her beloved Chinese Amah, a favorite American teacher, or fellow passengers on the several ocean voyages she traveled between China and the U.S. A trip back in time, with universal observances, as fresh and modern as contemporary fiction!
